Field Events

Read this if: you run a trust-critical, high-ACV, relationship-led sale. Skip if: you're a pure low-touch self-serve motion.

"In-person is in again." Why the channel AI didn't make cheaper is the one breaking through right now — and the one thing that decides whether an event pays back.

Of all seven channels, this is the one AI didn't commoditize, and that's precisely its value. When every inbox is full of automated outreach, a room full of the right people is the breakthrough move. AI didn't make being there cheaper; it made everything around being there count for more.

What's changed

Pre-event targeting got surgical. Pull the attendee list, enrich every account, score for ICP fit, and walk in with thirty named conversations to chase. "Let's see who comes by the booth" is obsolete.

Conversation capture is instant. A voice memo into Granola, Otter, or Fireflies produces structured notes before the next conversation starts.

Follow-up is personalized at scale. A workflow takes the meeting notes and the prospect's context and drafts a follow-up tuned to what you actually discussed, sent within 24 hours. The half-life of an event conversation is short; AI removed the excuse for slow.

Do this

  • Build a pre-event target list. Enrich, score, name your top twenty to fifty, and pre-book where possible. Show up with a calendar.
  • Capture every conversation the same day, a voice memo per meeting, turned into a structured record by the next morning.
  • Send personalized follow-up within 24 hours. Draft from the notes, human-edit, send. By week two the conversation is forgotten.
  • Measure ROI as pipeline within 90 days, never lead count. If you can't tie an event to opportunities, you'll lose the budget argument every time.

Don't do this

  • Don't sponsor on logo aspiration. Big-name events cost the most and convert the worst for early-stage companies. Smaller events your ICP attends in concentration are better leverage.
  • Don't rely on badge scans. A thirty-second voice memo per conversation is worth more than five hundred scans.
  • Don't send the same follow-up to everyone. It signals you don't remember the conversation, and personalized follow-up is now effectively free.

In practice

One Unusual Ventures portfolio company that sells long-cycle enterprise deals hosts small, targeted dinners around the moments its market already gathers for. The guest list is built from the accounts it most wants in the room rather than from whoever registers, and most people at the table are already somewhere inside a sales cycle. Every conversation is captured the same night and followed up within 24 hours. The dinner isn't there to source cold pipeline. It's there to move deals already in flight to their next step. That is the honest version of what field events do for an enterprise seller, and a better use of the channel than the lead-gen framing most playbooks still carry. Treat the event as the middle of an outbound sequence rather than a standalone moment; a dinner series run this way becomes an owned channel (see Forge Your Own Channel).

Field events: one lit room while the inboxes fill
The one channel AI didn’t commoditize — pre-target, capture, follow up within 24 hours.

Your first 30 days

  • ☐ Pick one event next quarter where your ICP attends in concentration, and name your top targets from the enriched list.
  • ☐ Set up the capture loop and build the 24-hour follow-up workflow before the event.
  • ☐ Define how you'll measure pipeline-within-90-days before you spend a dollar.
